Johannesburg, South Africa's biggest city and capital of Gauteng province, began as a 19th-century gold-mining settlement. Its sprawling Soweto township was once home to Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. Mandela’s former residence is now the Mandela House museum. Other Soweto museums that recount the struggle to end segregation include the somber Apartheid Museum and Constitution Hill, a former prison complex.

Welcome to the rainbow nation! Once landed in Johannesburg, South Africa, a member of the Explore Africa Tour team will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel.  We know getting to Africa is quite the journey so take some time to nap, freshen up and prepare for the evening.  Save your stomach, because our welcome dinner in the evening is best enjoyed on an empty stomach! Dine on traditional South African food and meet the entire Explore Africa group.

An important part of the Explore Africa Tour experience is giving back to the community. Every year we partner with the Myles & Ruth Munroe Foundation to service a local charity, school or non-profit organization.  Join us in the morning as we continue this tradition.  After lunch, you’re in for a history lesson as we make our way to the Cradle Of Humankind, the place where humankind is said to have originated. It is here that the first hominid, Australopithecus, was found in 1924.

This history of South Africa will always be linked to the unjust and inhumane system of Apartheid. Today, we will learn about how the system came to be, and how it was dismantled as we visit the Apartheid Museum. We will learn about the brave freedom fighters and movements that came out of historic Soweto Township as we visit the Regina Mundi Catholic Church, the Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu and Winnie Mandela’s homes.

Set your alarms, we have an early day. A safari is a quintessential African experience, it's the best way to see the diverse African wildlife, and that's what today is all about.  Be ready to be wowed by the BIG 5, the legends of the Africa wilderness, elephants, lions, buffalos, leopards and rhinos.

After lunch, you’ll have the opportunity to load up your suitcases with unique trinkets, souvenirs and gifts for those who missed out on this year’s experience as we go shopping in the famed SA markets.

Start off the day with breakfast, you’ll need it! We’ve got lots planned! First up, you’ll have the opportunity to learn about the history and culture of the many tribes of Africa as we head to Lesotho to the Lesedi Cultural Village. You’ll even have the opportunity to glimpse their way of life as you sit on the floor of an African hut!

After lunch, we have one rule keep all hands and feet in the vehicle! We’re heading to the Lion & Safari Park where you will set your eyes on the King of The Jungle as well as interact with baby cubs. You will also get to interact with the fastest animals on earth, the cheetahs and feed the tallest animals on earth, the giraffes.

After this day, it’s safe to say you've got the evening to yourselves.

They say an elephant never forgets a face, but I bet, you’ll never forget an elephant. Today we will be visiting the elephant sanctuary, where you will be able to get up close and person to the gentle giant. Feed them, talk to them, walk with them and we’re sure you’ll fall in love with them.

After lunch, the evening is at your leisure.

It's so hard to say goodbye, but we hope you made enough memories and took enough pictures to last a few forevers.  We'll get together one last time at breakfast and then we say our final goodbyes to the Joburg. A member of the Explore Africa team will be on hand to see you off to the airport!
